The cabinet reveal…finally.

Well, the time has arrived at last. I’m {embarrassingly} overly excited to post the finished pictures of our cabinet make-over!

It took me less than two full weeks to complete the cabinet remodel – not too bad for working a full time job & spending time at baseball games! I was so determined to finish this project. Once I start something, I just hate dragging it out.

Once I finished waiting for all the white paint to dry, I had to hang all the doors again. I took a chance last week to see if I could salvage the existing ugly hinges rather than buying new ones…some where brass, some were silver-ish, most were tarnished.  My weapon of choice? You guessed it, more spray paint.

Did they turn out perfectly? No. Did it work well enough for me? Yes. Is anyone going to look at my door hinges close enough to notice they’re spray painted? Nope. Did it save me a ton of time because I could use the preexisting holes to hang my doors? Oh yeah!

Now on to hanging the hardware. Two days ago, my handy-dandy, can-fix-anything Dad came over & blessed me with a template he was making to help me install the millions nineteen or so handles. Here’s what he came up with…

It’s two sided, so it worked for every door & once we had the perfect square to rest on the doors, and the pre-measured/calculated holes, we just had to mark the dots on the doors, drill, and then it was free sailing. {So helpful!}

The cup pulls, on the other hand, were not so simple. Most of the drawers were different sizes, so it took some painstaking, headache producing math to calculate how to get them in the center of each drawer. Especially when the cabinets are so crappy to start with…the doors weren’t all perfectly cut & the drawers don’t even sit evenly, making it nearly impossible to look flawless.

But I finally finished them late last night. I’ll have to fix the pulls in front of the sink when we replace the counters & sink later because they’re off a little, but eh, I really don’t care! Luckily, I’m not too much of a perfectionist when it comes to these types of things. You just gotta work with what you’re given, and we happen to have less than perfect lower-quality cabinets.

Mmm, I’m diggin’ the hardware. {So much} better.

Ready for the room pictures? :)

The blank white area on the wall below will be our chalk board spot. {Can’t wait!}

I’m toying with having two open cabinets instead of just one now. Yeah, I’m thinking it’ll stay this way.

Here’s the nitty-gritty breakdown for anyone interested in the numbers:

  • Lots of sanding using a hand sander we bought a while back from Menards for around $20, and by hand on the bases
  • Silver Krylon spray paint for the door hinges $3 & lots left over
  • One coat of Zinsser’s primer on all surfaces $19.00 for a gallon & I have about a 1/3 of it left. I still wonder if I should have gone with my gut and done an oil-based primer {Lowes recommended the Zinsser primer I used}. I guess only time will tell!
  • Two coats of Olympic Semi-Gloss “White” base paint on all the cabinet bases and drawers, including inside shelf areas and drawers
  • Three coats of Olympic Semi-Gloss “White” base paint on all the cabinet doors – all took just under 1 gallon at $23.00
  • 19 cabinet handles purchased online for $2.16 a pop & 10 drawer cup pulls purchased online for $2.42 a pop, totaling $65.24

All coming to a grand total of $130.24 for this huge change, and that includes the sander! :)

When you look at it compared to where we started, it’s such a ginormous difference!

So now we get to cross cabinets off the list & move on to the flooring, range hood, countertops, sink, lighting, curtains, {the list goes on!} I’m just pleased as punch that the cabinets are completed & that they actually look better than before. :)

  9. Wow--those look great! It reminds me of our first house (and favorite kitchen). We had white cabinets, scroll work over the window, and pale yellow walls, too. Congratulations--it looks like your hard work is going to pay off!

  10. Your painted cabinets make such a huge difference in your kitchen. When we were renovating our kitchen, we painted out 50 year old cabinets, too, and spray painted the hinges black. I can't wait to see what else you are going to do in your kitchen. Visiting from BNOTP today. I am now following. Come visit me-we are having a giveaway this week.
