Ruffle love.

Last night after waiting for a basement company to show up {they never did} for a free estimate, we headed over to Eugene’s parents’ place to celebrate his dad’s birthday.  Yeah for family birthdays & yeah for turtle ice cream cake!

This weekend, I bonded with my sewing machine again. Since I had a pretty decent time making kitchen curtains, I set out to make some sheer white ruffle curtains for our bathroom window, and I’m excited to share my final product.

IMG_3117

I LOVE how they turned out! How about a bit more details on the process? Well, here’s  the original window. Yucky old blinds included.

IMG_3013

I removed the blinds, hung the simple curtain rod {$3 or so at Walmart} a few inches higher and a few inches wider than my window. Then I measured the amount of fabric I would need and added roughly 3 inches to the top, 1 inch to each side, and 2 inches to the bottom for my seams. I sewed a pocket for the rod and left 1 1/2 of fabric above for a ruffle at the top. Oh, and I love to use pinking shears to cut the edges so that I don’t have to worry about turning them under twice and I don’t use as much fabric.

IMG_3018

Once I got the basic curtains completed, I tested them out on the window to make sure I measured correctly.

IMG_3020

Once I knew the basic curtains were all set, I cut long strips {again, using pinking shears so that they won’t unravel} about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches wide {I didn’t really measure, because I didn’t want them to look perfectly precise.}

IMG_3021

From there, I adjusted my sewing machine stitch length to the highest it would go {4} and sewed straight down the middle of the strips without backstitching {that’s important…don’t backstitch!}.

IMG_3031

You also want to leave a few inches of thread attached from where you started and ended sewing down the middle.

IMG_3034

Using that extra thread, you want to pull just one of the threads gently & bunch your fabric down. As you do this, your ruffle will begin to form.

IMG_3062-horz

Continue gently pulling on the thread & bunching the fabric until your whole strip becomes ruffled.

 IMG_3033

After I made a whole bunch of ruffled strips, I pinned them to the bottom of my curtains. This part I did measure just to make sure the horizontal lines were straight and matched on both panels.

IMG_3050

When I had to combine two strips of ruffles, I simply pinned one overtop of the other. Because I used the pinking shears on all the edges, it wasn’t obvious at all where the strips of ruffles joined.

 IMG_3048

IMG_3113

Once I had all three ruffled lines pined, I switched my machine stitch length back to normal {2} and carefully sewed straight down the middle of each ruffle. This is necessary even if you don’t want to attach your ruffle to a curtain because the first time you sewed the ruffles it was just a basting stitch, it won’t actually hold the ruffle together.

IMG_3115

I also lessened the pressure foot tension, which probably helped some too. I made sure to stitch slowly, using my fingers to push the fabric through steadily.

IMG_3114

Once each ruffle was securely attached to the curtain, I was good to go!

IMG_3120

Pretty pretty ruffles!

IMG_3118

I bout the fabric, 4 yards, for $16 with a coupon & sale price. I only used half for this project, and the curtain rod was only about 3 bucks, so for $11 I have a sweet new curtain. I used the remaining 2 yards of fabric to add ruffles to something else in the bathroom, but I’ll save that for another post.

Banishing the bushes.

We had a lovely anniversary evening together. Nothing extravagant, but still perfect.

IMG_3164

We went out to dinner at Red Lobster, where I enjoyed the Parrot Bay Coconut Shrimp, followed by the triple chocolate brownie a la mode {shared}, and Eugene kept it safe/boring {as usual} with chicken fingers & fries.

It was definitely unhealthy, but ridiculously delicious. And what made it even better for me {being the cheapskate that I am} was that we had a gift card that covered most of the bill! Guiltless joy! :) We also watched The King’s Speech, which was a good movie, but not as good as the last movie we watched, August Rush.

Other big news for the house, more specifically, curb appeal mission: “fix the eye-sore that *was* our yard,” our house now looks like this…

IMG_3167

Did you notice the difference? {The title of the post probably helped.} Eugene borrowed his dad’s four-wheeler & my dad’s ax and rope-tie-thingy, and with some shoveling, axing, and yanking, Eugene successfully removed 7 unsightly bushes from the front of our house.

IMG_3128

One bush had died before we moved in, but the others were still alive & kickin’. I felt slightly bad about pulling the living plants, but everyone I talked to agree that they were dated, ugly, and made it extremely difficult to plant around them because of their root systems.

IMG_3127

While Eugene focused on the bush banishing, I took out some aggression on some low-lying branches on our trees. These buggers were a royal pain to mow around/under, so I was happy to knock em’ down.

IMG_3125

We had quite a large pile of bushes & branches for pick up, and believe it or not, the township folks came and removed the brush the next day!

IMG_3132

We were able to conquer the right side of the house on Sunday night, taking it from this…

Or if you want to go back to an earlier before picture, here’s the comparison…

Then, despite the drizzling rain, Eugene, with the help of his awesome sister, tackled the left side of the house yesterday while I was at work.

And how about a full house comparison shot?

I was so happy that Eugene got so much done without me, that I didn’t even mind that the pup apparently loved the muddy holes that the bushes left. He was covered in clumped dirt & our house reeked of soggy dog when I got home. He reluctantly got a much-needed bath, and continued to pout at me for the next half-hour.

IMG_3146

He is so not pleased. He much prefers dirt.

One last shrub-less house picture…

Now, I need to beg/plead/bribe my mom {or simply ask, cause she’s that nice}, aka the master gardener, work her magic on the landscaping. It’ll be worth of a full spread in Better Homes and Gardens in no time – well, maybe that’s a stretch – but at the very least it won’t be the eye-sore of the neighborhood any more! ;)

Two years.

We spent the weekend working on the house, putting up more of the fence – taking one corner from this…

IMG_3045

to this…

IMG_3046

We also tackled a few other house projects {more on that later this week}, and I think I officially wore out Eugene & the pup. Check out these two peas in a pod…

IMG_3052-horz

I promise you that this was not staged. Eugene laid down of the floor to stretch his sore back & Espn copied him laying his head on Eugene’s arm. Just look at the dog’s legs sprawled out!

We also celebrated Father’s Day yesterday with our amazing dads – lunch after church with my dad & dinner at Eugene’s grandparents’ place with his dad & grandpa.

IMG_3121

We’re so blessed – beyond blessed – to have such Godly, wise father-figures in our lives. Not only did our dads play an active role in shaping who we are today, but they also care so deeply for us that we can experience a human’s father’s love somewhat like that of our Heavenly Father. To have a Godly father’s presence & love is a rarity today, and both Eugene & I are so thankful God has blessed us with such amazing men as fathers.

And we have another occasion to celebrate today as well…

IMG_3145

I love the note in the car trick, even if it’s pencil on notebook paper. {Makes me smile every time.} Yep, two years ago today, I married my best friend.

We were surrounded by our best friends & our family…

Had a personal ceremony, with our own vows, beautiful music, so many people there to support us…

We had perfect – absolutely perfect – weather {probably because I had everyone I knew, and some I didn’t, praying for the weather that day} We also had a huge blessing of the bountiful wheat field surrounding us {it literally yielded a huge, unexpectedly-large amount of wheat crop at harvest.} It’s a long story, but the wheat field was a total blessing from God that wasn’t at all necessary or anticipated, and completely blew me away as a gift from God. :)

We also had a beautiful reception under a tent behind my parents’ house, lit up by candles, white lights, and lanterns. It was very simple, but very “me.”

Jordan & Caitlin-762

And best of all, I got to celebrate the fact that Eugene & I committed to being together for the rest of our lives. It was one of the best days I will ever have. {Hands down.}

bw dancing

Eugene & I have faced way more trials and challenges than we could have ever imagined in these short two years of marriage. Had someone told me all that we’d go through, I wouldn’t have believed that we’d be standing so tall today. But we are standing tall, and we’re still standing happily next to each other and still holding on tight. And to be frank, that’s the only way we’ve made it so gracefully. God’s been generous and merciful to us through our marriage so far; it’s been absolutely incredible to see His hand working through each of the trails we’ve faced. He’s proven time & time again to be our ultimate Provider for all things.

Despite the fact that these two years have probably been the hardest of my life, they’ve also been stuffed full of love. I’m thankful for my husband, who has weathered the storms by my side, holding my hand through it all. We’re so blessed to have each other in such a precious marriage. I love him {so much.}

And yes, that’s where the title of the blog comes from. :)

Happy anniversary, Eugene. I pray that the Lord blesses us with so many more!
