House tour: bathroom.

I’m wrapping up the virtual house tour. For the past posts, you can see them here: guest bedroom, little one’s room, master bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room.

Our main bathroom is small, but it’s been through a mighty DIY transformation. Most of the projects are detailed in the bathroom reveal post; however, Eugene put in new flooring since then.

This room was bad, bad, bad when we moved in…

And here’s the now…

I think I’m most proud of this room & the kitchen for transformations on a low budget. I painted the pink tile. Yes, painted, and it’s holding up marvelously! Still looks good as new! I spray painted the faucet, but that one’s not holding up quite as well. I’ll probably need to repaint soon due to some chipping. I sewed ruffle curtains and added a lengthening ruffle strip to the shower curtain. We had someone come in and fix the ceiling, and Eugene & his dad installed a new vent/light. {Still need to install one more light.}

Looks much better than the befores, huh! I have a few more projects up my sleeve for this room, but I’m super happy with its transformation.

Bathroom floor.

Eugene spent one of his vacation days re-doing our main bathroom’s flooring. The original floor was fine, no damage and it looked “just okay.” He already fixed up the flooring in our small half-bath attached to the little one’s room, so we just used the same peel & stick tile. We know it’s not top-quality, nor will it last long, but we thought it’s worth the $45.00 to have the bathroom look much better and cleaner, even if we have to re-do it in a couple years.

So here’s the original pink-tiled, wallpapered bathroom in all its glory compared with today’s version…

{Painted tile post here and diy curtains here.}

The original flooring was one sheet of vinyl.

We have had a toilet in virtually every room we own – bedrooms, front yard, living room, you name it…

No matter how much I cleaned it, it was permanently stained…

This looks much better {and cleaner!}

The lighting is awful in the bathroom, and I took many of the pics at night after the little one went to bed, so I apologize for the poor quality. Here’s a couple more before & afters…

Not bad for the price of a tank of gas!

This bathroom’s come a loooong way with a little budget!

Bathroom upgrade.

When we bought our foreclosed home, there was a small half bath attached to one of the bedrooms. It consisted of this plastic/cardboard, faux floral tile wall covering with lots of chunky wood accessories. The floor was the thinnest shiny faux light grey marble sticky {or not so sticky} tiles.

Here’s a close up of the faux tile wall coverings…

I blogged a while ago when Eugene removed the wall coverings and replaced the flooring

He’s still working on the final pieces of trim, and we still have to paint the ceiling and finish some other little details, but our little half bath has come a long way….

New pedestal sink, new toilet {with a diaper sprayer attached}, beadboard walls, clean light and bright mirror with new floor and trim.

I made a a colorful doily pendant too – I’ll blog it later.

A church friend bought this cute piece of homemade art off of Etsy…

I bought the light from Menards and got the mirror for $14 from Meijer, of all places.

It’s not perfect, but it’s so much better. Cleaner, brighter, & happier. :)

Bathroom progress.

Eugene texted me this photo earlier this week with the caption, “Just a little preview”…

photo

Ahh, so much better. :)

He removed the toilet & sink to lay down some basic peel & stick tile in our little one’s bathroom. We went with peel & stick even though a lot of people turn up their noses at it because it’s a tiny space, the floors already pretty uneven, and we’re really the only two people who will ever go in there. We spent just under $20 for the box of tile at Lowes, and we have plenty left. We didn’t want to waste a lot of money or time right now on such a small, infrequently used room, and we’re pretty pleased with the way it turned out!

You can still see some barcode stickers, but I’ll take care of those this weekend. We both agreed it looks way better than we anticipated – yea, cheap tile from Lowes, way to impress!

IMG_0134

The challenge is to drag your eye away from the hideous, unfinished walls. Eugene’s tackling that soon too. Here’s a close up of the floor to give you eyes a rest. {The barcodes crack me up. Must remove those asap!}

Not too shabby for under $20.

Happy Good Friday, all. I love  living Easter weekend. I don’t necessarily look forward to any of the food, parties, fancy dresses so much, but I love church on Good Friday & Easter Sunday. It’s what our hope is all about! I’m so humbled today, on Good Friday, by my amazing Savior.

Half-bath demo.

The little half bath that’s connected to the baby’s room is dire need of a reno. And unfortunately, the first step to the reno is a demo. I know all the TV shows make it seem like demo is so much fun, but I personally really dislike demoing. Really don’t enjoy it a bit. It seems so counterproductive to make something look so much worse and dirtier, but I know it’s just a step in the process.

Here’s a refresher of the little space prior to any demo. Basically the only thing we did when we moved in was to replace the toilet. Well, that and to use it as a storage place for a sink, light, and shelving unit…

The sink and mirror desperately needed to go…

IMG_9192

IMG_9193

I removed the mirror/medicine cabinet with just a few screws, and removed the sink. Biggest thing to remember about removing the sink was to shut off the hot and cold water pipes. Other than that it was pretty much common sense; just unscrewing a few precise nuts so that it would just pull off. Eugene then ripped out the cabinet.

IMG_9512

We used a crow bar and a hammer to wedge into the molding, baseboards, and cardboard “tile” on the walls and rip it off piece by piece.

IMG_9183

IMG_9185

IMG_9184

That’s some pretty nice flooring, huh. {Sarcasm.}

So when we ripped the cardboard tile off the wall, we discovered some interesting things. Not to build this up…it’s not nearly as entertaining as my discovery of the evergreen trees and coyotes in our other bathroom. But for some reason, there were numerous {at least 7} random holes in the drywall behind the “tile.” See this….

IMG_9190

We can’t figure it out. Why are these holes here? There’s nothing behind the wall, so no apparent reason. Eh, oh well. We did figure out that two of the holes were old toilet paper roll holders or soap holders…we think. Oh, and we found out that 1 1/2 of the walls were originally ceramic tiles. Somewhere along the way the tiles were removed. A few of the tiles still remain where the pipes from the sink connect to the walls. Nice, huh.

IMG_9515

The floor’s coming up okay too. I’ve been using a putty knife to peel the tiles up. It takes some patience, but it works.

IMG_9516

We got quite a bit of the demo completed. Nothing quite like using a toilet for a ladder. Hey, whatever works.

IMG_9514

And not only does it look like a tornado went through our bathroom, but for a brief moment, our front yard did too!

IMG_9510

Yucky, foreclosed sink. Really happy to have it gone!
